OCT BOOK PROJECT:
periods:  2, 6
Due. Oct 31
​
1.  make a collage on the front that represents the main character and the plot
​
a.  a collage that has NO blank space
b.  it needs these 3 things:
   1.  pics - can be printed, drawn, cut out, or any combination
   2.  words
   3.  phrases
​
c.  on the back write about 1 tangible gift you would give the character and WHY.  LABEL it TANGIBLE GIFT
d.  on the back write about 1 intangible gift you would give the character and WHY.  LABEL it INTANGIBLE GIFT
​
e.  Tangible and Intangible gifts should be 3-5 sentences each, edited and double checked!!!
TANGIBLE is something real you can hold such as a phone or a book.
INTANGIBLE is something you can't touch like forgiveness or acceptance, or the quality of humor, ect.
​

Book Project for 7th and 8th:

Alphabet Book:

The alphabet book uses each letter of the alphabet to explain ANY part (major or minor) of the book.  

 

Each letter forms a word that is connected to the book

​

____Each letter should have 3 full, complete sentences that explains the significance, or connection, of that word to the book 

​

____underline or highlight the word in the sentence

​

Only  3 letters may be character names

​

____Each of the 3 sentences should be somewhat detailed. 

For example:  “She likes dancing.” is the type of simple sentence to AVOID overusing!!!!

"D is for Dancing" IS NOT A SENTENCE and DOES NOT COUNT!

​

____Each letter should have a picture, symbol, or drawing with it

You may use magazine pictures if you would like to, or computer pics, or a combo of any of these

​

You may skip 2 letters for a total of 24 letters in the alphabet.

____INCLUDE THE LETTER YOU SKIP AND JUST PUT A BIG "X" THROUGH IT

​

You may do it in a paper book style (paper folded in half) or a list style on regular sized paper.

Do not do 26 pages of full size paper!

 

FOR EXAMPLE, if I read Cinderella:

 

D - DANCE

♬♬ 

At first, Cinderella thought she would not be able to go to the ball where everyone was DANCING.  However, through a surprising and magical twist of events involving a fairy godmother, she made it to the ball.  It was at this ball where she first met and danced with the prince.

 8th Grade Book Review OUTLINE & EXAMPLE

Below is an EXACT outline with an example sentence under EVERY part. Use this outline and proofread your work!  When you read it, does it transition and flow together?  Does it make sense to someone who never read your book???

I.  Paragraph 1 - Introduce

 

A.  Hook the Reader

Imagine a world where color doesn’t even exist.

​

B Book and author

This is the type of setting the reader is introduced to in “The Giver”, a novel by Lois Lowry.

​

C.  Type of book

“The Giver” is a dystopian fiction novel. means that the novel is set in a controlling society with little freedom.

​

D.  Topics, themes covered

In depressing and shocking setting, Lowry addresses the topics of trust, rebellion and hope.

 

II.  Paragraph 2 - Summarize the content

 

A. Introduce main character

  1. Describe the person/persons

In “The Giver”, we meet Jonas, the main character. Jonas is the person selected to learn certain secrets of the society.When he learns , , he is not happy.

​

B.  Give a QUOTE to help or prove the description

“Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain…” Lowry writes.

​

C.  Explain plot briefly without giving away ending.

As Jonas learns more and more about the society, he begins to change.  He can no longer relate to his friends or family.  He is tortured in a way that nobody else in his world understands.  Ultimately, he will have to make a painful and difficult choice that will affect everyone he knows.

 

III.  Paragraph 3 - Evaluate/Recommend

 

A. What are the books strengths?

  1. Give one quote or paraphrase that proves why you recommend or don’t

This book is intriguing it describes a world that none of us have ever imagined. , on p.27 “This evening he would have preferred to keep his feelings hidden.But this, of course, was against the rules.” The novel is also filled with suspense as Jonas learns more and more.

​

B.  What, if any, are the books weaknesses?

  1. IF the book will not be recommended, give one quote or paraphrase to help explain what you didn’t like

The only problem with this book is the ending.It leaves the reader wanting more!

​

C. Recommend or don’t recommend

  1. Explain WHY

I highly recommend this book because it a unique page-turner that will hold your attention!

 

 

 

********NOW:   YOU MUST RE-READ carefully.  This is because even if you followed the outline, if the sentences don’t sound right next to each other, you have to change it, add transitions, or make it make sense.  You will be graded on this.  (Highlights show where I did this in the example)

7th Gr HW:  Sentence Types 

 

Identifying Fragments and Run-On Sentences:  Write (S) if the group of words expresses a complete sentence.  Write (RO) if the group of words is a run-on sentence, and write (F) on the line if the group of words is a fragment.

Identifying Independent and Subordinate Clauses:   Write IND on the line if the underlined words express an independent clause.  Write DEP on the line if the underlined words express a dependent clause.

Identifying Simple and Compound Sentences:  Identify each of the following sentences as (S) simple or (CD) compound
